December 24, 2006

Well, I've finished wrapping all the presents. We are having a quiet day here. Later we are going to see "The Nativity Story". When that's over, it will be time for "It's a Wonderful Life" to begin on TV. It's a good thing we only live a couple minutes from the theater. Tomorrow we will be going to Tim and Janet's house in the afternoon. Our big gift exchange will not be until New Year's Day. Have a blessed Christmas!

Snowy Day, the Pictures

Landon braved the cold to play in the front yard while
Grandpa was snowblowing the driveway for the second time.

Grandpa with his boys on Saturday afternoon.

Doesn't he look proud?

Taylor got under the hide-a-bed.

Maybe he was practicing for his first game of hide and seek.

Doo, doo, doo, lookin' out my back door.

This was the midday Friday, before the kids played in the snow.

Snowy Day

Senior Boyds Life

We had a snow day yesterday. Mark and Sonja and the boys stayed here Thursday night and Friday night. Mark and Gordy were supposed to work together Fri. about 25 miles west of here. The prediction was for rain turning to sleet turning to snow-about 6-12 inches. Well, as you may have seen on the news, it came.

Gordy, after snowblowing our driveway (about 6 inches), was determined to get to the job. He put the truck into 4 wheel drive and took off (OUR street had not yet been plowed). They got to the town where the job was, taking much longer than usual. Visibility on the tollway was VERY low. Along the way they saw cars (including a police car) and trucks in the ditch. When they got to the house, the street had just been plowed one lane worth, the residents cars were parked on the street, and the end of the driveway was much deeper. They got one wheel stuck in a hole and had to borrow a shovel to dig it out.

So with nowhere to park the truck, the decision was made to return home. Easier said than done. The ramp to the tollway was blocked with a jack-knifed semi so they took a secondary road notorious for being difficult in snowy weather.

On the way they encountered cars stuck in the snow. They stopped to help but couldn't. They also couldn't pass through. They were finally set free by a tractor which pulled the cars out and cleared the road with its snow blower.

When they got to our street...another obstacle. Having still not been plowed, the mailman, trying to do his duty was stuck in the middle of the street. They drove home and returned on foot to the little mail truck with shovels and muscle power. They shoveled and pushed for about a half and hour only succeeding in turning the vehicle partway so it was sideways in the street. They finally got some help from neighbors and finished the turn so the postman could return to the post office. He offered to give out their mail but all refused, saying it was only mail and probably only contained bills or junk mail.

They finally were able to come home--very hungry for it was lunch time.

Gordy finished the day snowblowing our driveway again, snowblowing Tim's driveway, snowblowing Tim's neighbor's driveway, and snowblowing Dan's driveway.

He returned home very tired and hungry.

Mark and family decided to stay another night because of predictions of high winds which creates drifting.

The guys left about three hours ago to try the job again and we've heard nothing yet. No news is good news, as my dad always says.
